This week the state legislature passed the New York State Equal Rights Amendment (“ERA”) which will now be voted on in the Fall 2024 ballot. If the amendment is successful, New York would become the 28th state to have an ERA protecting womens’ rights, but also notably the 1st state to explicitly protect reproductive rights in an ERA and the 2nd state to explicitly protects LGBTQIA+ people in an ERA. Simply put, steps are being taken so that our state constitution can formalize and concretize more civils rights!
